We are thrilled to be working with the California Innocence Project on behalf of Michael Hanline, who was exonerated after serving 36 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Brett Schreiber of THORSNES BARTOLOTTA McGUIRE is leading Mr. Hanline’s request for full recovery from the Victim Compensation & Government Claims Board. Even in states where compensation is legislated, victims of wrongful convictions are often denied compensation because of technicalities that limit compensation awards.
Inmates are often exonerated and released with much fanfare but after their fifteen minutes of fame are over, they are left with scars from years spent fighting a system that often fails to acknowledge its mistakes and even more rarely offers an apology. While many experts agree that the wrongfully incarcerated deserve compensation post-release, the justice system is slow to respond and those who have suffered years, sometimes decades of wrongful incarceration struggle to make lives for themselves.
Too often the exonerated face numerous challenges when trying to put their lives back together. In contrast to inmates who are paroled are generally given a couple hundred dollars and services that help them integrate back into society, innocent inmates receive no money and there are rarely given post-release programs to help them to assimilate back into society. In addition to financial compensation, advocates agree that reentry services should be provided immediately upon release that are at least comparable to those received by parolees.
We hope our legal video services provide the Victim Compensation & Government Claims Board the necessary information they need to fully compensate Mr. Hanline for all of the time stolen from him.
